We were anticipating the release of a smaller mid-size SUV from Mazda, but the newly unveiled CX-70 turned out to be bigger than expected, sharing a platform and wheelbase with the three-row CX-90. It is essentially a CX-90 without the third row.
Mazda CX-70
The 2025 Mazda CX-70 will be available with a turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine in two power ratings, as well as a plug-in-hybrid powertrain. The CX-70 has a distinct look from its sibling, with black accents on the grille, mirrors, and door handles.
Mazda's decision to release a mid-size SUV that is the same size as the CX-90 without the third row surprised us. It appears to be an option rather than a standalone model, but we are just here to report on it, not make marketing decisions.
Fortunately, the CX-70 has the same attractive design as the CX-90, with soft leather and patterned metallic trim. It also has design changes to make it stand out, such as a blacked-out grille, mirrors, door handles, and trim pieces, as well as unique wheels.
The CX-70 offers plenty of room and comfort, with reclining seats, ample head- and legroom, and a panoramic sunroof. The second row has a hidden underfloor storage box and a vast cargo area. Folding the seats is easy with a push of a button located inside the cargo hatch. Based on the CX-90, the CX-70 should provide 40 cubic feet behind the second row and 75 cubic feet when those seats are folded.
The CX-70 offers three different powertrain options, all of which mirror those found in the CX-90. The turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine and 48-volt hybrid system are available in both 280-hp and 340-hp ratings, as well as a plug-in hybrid using a 2.5-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor to produce a combined 323 horsepower. All three options come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
Inside, the CX-70 features a full-color digital dash and 12.3-inch infotainment display, controlled by buttons and a rotary knob on the center console. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both compatible, and Mazda now offers Amazon Alexa integration. The CX-70 also features "Unresponsive Driver Support," a new software addition that brings the vehicle to a halt if the driver ignores warning alerts.
Mazda is expected to offer five or so upper level trims of the CX-70 with a corresponding higher starting price, as opposed to the confusing range of trim levels offered for the CX-90. The CX-70 is set to hit the market in spring 2024.
